Product information "3M UHMW Polyethylene Sliding Adhesive Tape 5421"
3M UHMW Polyethylene Sliding Adhesive Tape 5421
Product Description
3M™ UHMW PE Tape 5421 protects surfaces from abrasion. The 0.17 mm thick tape offers excellent abrasion resistance, making it ideal for applications where abrasion resistance and sliding properties are required. It creates a “sliding” surface that allows contact without abrasion. The product is a thinner version of 3M™ UHMW PE Tape 5423.
3M™ UHMW Polyethylene Sliding Adhesive Tape 5421 is widely used in general industrial applications to reduce squeaking and rattling noises caused by vibration, as well as wear on metals and plastics. The UHMW PE tape (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is chemically resistant and abrasion-resistant, ensuring long service life. The tape is supplied with a protective liner, allowing it to be converted into die-cut parts. It is ideally suited for guide rollers and rollers to improve surface friction. This tape, featuring a smooth surface, is primarily used in the aerospace, automotive, and printing industries, as well as for maintenance and repair operations.
Recommended application areas
- Guide rails for conveyor belts and ramps
- Protective lining for paint booths
- Protective lining for tanks and containers
- Slide rails for drawers and cabinets
- Protection of aluminum sheets in cold drawing presses
The Science Behind 3M Tapes
The effectiveness of this tape is based on the polyethylene backing material with its extremely high molecular weight (UHMW PE). UHMW PE is a thermoplastic material that offers a unique combination of properties, such as exceptional toughness and low surface energy. The extremely high molecular weight of this tape significantly reduces friction and provides an effective solution for applications requiring non-stick properties and quick release. The abrasion resistance of UHMW PE is higher than that of PTFE and increases with rising molecular weight. The exceptional durability and versatility of UHMW PE are utilized by designers and engineers worldwide across many industries. UHMW PE-based products offer versatile properties, including high abrasion resistance, a low coefficient of friction, and very high impact strength. Due to these properties, they are ideal for applications requiring high abrasion resistance and sliding capability. The low coefficient of friction is exceeded only by PTFE. However, UHMW PE tape offers higher abrasion resistance.
Properties
- The translucent, abrasion-resistant backing material protects surfaces from wear
- Can reduce squeaking, rattling, and other noises caused by movement
- The low coefficient of friction allows easy sliding between two surfaces
- Used in applications where lubricants cannot be applied due to the associated contamination
- The rubber-resin adhesive provides good initial tack and creates a fast bond between two materials
- Thanks to the protective liner, the tape can be processed or die-cut into various lengths and shapes
Suggested Applications
- Reduces squeaking and rattling noises during assembly in the automotive or logistics industries
- For separating dissimilar components to reduce noise and friction
- For lining chutes, transport and conveyor belts, as well as side guide rails
- For protecting metal surfaces during processing on stamping and bending presses
- For flat guide rails on conveyor belts and chutes
